Casting Instruction for All Skill Levels

experienced fly fishingThe core upon which all fly-fishing is molded is the cast. It is with the cast that the fly-fisher presents the dry fly which alights gently upon the water’s surface. It is with the cast that the nymph or streamer is propelled to the water to pierce the surface and descend into the depths.

It is the introduction to, and mastery of, good casting skills which enables the fly-fisher to be effective on the water. I’ve heard the statement many times: “I may not be a good caster, but I sure can catch fish!” To this I say, invest the time to become a good caster and you will become an even better fly-fisher. Bottom line: you’ll catch even more fish!

Salmo-Trutta Enterprises offers casting lessons for all skill levels from introductory through advanced. For the individual, or group, looking to begin the great journey fly-fishing offers, instruction is provided in the basic cast (picking up and laying down the fly), the roll cast, false casting and shooting line. With these skills the novice is ready to go fishing.

Experienced fly-fishers can take their casting to a higher level by learning to increase effective casting distance or learning specialty presentation casts. Also, learning to cast more efficiently can lessen fatigue and help to make time on the water more enjoyable.

Dave Rothrock is a Certified Casting Instructor by the Federation of Fly Fishers. His style of teaching is both relaxed and informal. Dave is known to put the student at ease and make the learning process a positive—and fun—experience.

Introductory & Advanced Fly-Fishing Instruction

Learning to fly-fish can appear to be an overwhelming endeavor for someone just beginning this great journey. The best way to begin is with good, quality fly-fishing instruction.

Salmo-Trutta Enterprises offers both one- and two-day introductory fly-fishing schools. These schools are formatted to introduce the beginning fly fisher to the critical elements of fly-fishing. Learn how to match equipment—rods, reels, lines, leaders, flies. Learn to tie the most important knots. Learn about the different artificial flies—dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers—and how they’re used. Learn about the various flies which inhabit the waters we fish and their importance in the fishes’ diet. Learn where fish hold in the water and why. And, of course, learn the basic skills of casting to be able to present the fly to fish.

The one-day introductory fly-fishing school is 8 hours of intensive instruction and, with much material to cover, the opportunity to get out on the water and put this newly acquired knowledge to practice is very limited.

The two-day introductory fly-fishing school is conducted at a more relaxed pace and at least half of the second day is spent on the water fishing.

For the experienced fly-fisher who desires to become even more effective on the stream, Salmo-Trutta Enterprises offers advanced, specialized fly-fishing lessons . From analyzing complex currents to executing a specialty cast to ensure the best drag-free drift for a dry fly, to target nymphing, specialized instruction can elevate the fly-fisher to a higher level of proficiency and potential on the stream.
